Dmitry Medvedev instructed Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov to hold a meeting of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee to examine the issue of lifting the counter-terrorist operation regime currently in place in Chechnya

Mr Medvedev said that even if the special regime is lifted, the FSB, together with the other law enforcement agencies, will have to continue closely monitoring the situation in the Republic of Chechnya and in the other republics in southern Russia, where the threat of terrorism still remains.
