The names of the laureates of the National Awards were announced by member of the Presidential Council for Science, Technology and Education and President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yury Osipov and by member of the Presidential Council for Literature and the Arts and Director of the Hermitage Museum Mikhail Piotrovsky.

Three awards have been awarded in science and technology (one on closed subject matter) and three awards in literature and the arts.

The 2005 National Award in science and technology is awarded to Igor Gorynin, academician in the Russian Academy of Sciences and general director of the Prometei Construction Materials Scientific Research Institute (a Russian Federation state research centre) for his outstanding contribution to the study of materials and the development of unique construction materials and technology.

Alexander Skrinsky, academician in the Russian Academy of Sciences and director of the G.I. Budker Nuclear Physics Institute of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been awarded the 2005 National Award in science and technology for outstanding achievements in high-energy physics.

Actor and film director Alexei Batalov has been awarded the 2005 National Award in literature and the arts for works and performances that have become classics of Russian cinematic art.

Ballet dancer Nurlan Kanetov, composer Leonid Lyubovsky and writer Renat Kharisov (Renat Kharis) have been awarded the 2005 National Award in literature and the arts for developing the traditions of the national epic in the context of the modern dialogue between cultures.

Pianist, conductor and composer Mikhail Pletnev has been awarded the 2005 National Award in literature and the arts for his outstanding talent as a performer and his innovation in the musical arts that has opened a new chapter in Russian and world culture.

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexii II has been awarded the National Award for outstanding achievements in humanitarian work in 2005. The National Award is awarded for productive work to promote education and peace that contribute to the affirmation of enduring moral values and the consolidation of society.

The award ceremony for the 2005 National Awards in science and technology, literature and the arts will take place on Russia Day, June 12, 2006, in the Kremlin.
