Dmitry Medvedev submitted the revised European Social Charter of 3 May 1996 to the State Duma for ratification

March 28, 2009

The revised European Social Charter of 3 May 1996 was signed on behalf of the Russian Federation in Strasbourg on 14 September 2000.

The Charter guarantees social and economic human rights and establishes a supervisory body to ensure the compliance of States Parties.

Following its adoption in 1961 and entry into force in 1965, the European Social Charter was revised in 1996 to update certain categories of rights and incorporate new ones in the light of social changes occurring in European countries.

Currently, all 47 states members of the Council of Europe have signed the European Social Charter of 1961 and the new charter, and 39 States have ratified it (15 ratified the Charter of 1961 and 24 have ratified the revised version).
