An expanded session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of State took place

One of the major themes of the SCO summit was international information security. Vladimir Putin called on the leaders of SCO member countries to pay increased attention to social issues, health care and cooperation in the spheres of culture and education.

They also discussed establishing a mechanism to coordinate the fight against illegal drug trafficking and an SCO energy club which would allow member countries to expand their cooperation in transport and communications.

Leaders of the SCO observer countries – India, Iran, Mongolia, Pakistan – as well as Afghanistan, a guest of the summit, took part in an expanded session.

Following the expanded session a session was held with only the following participants: the leaders of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as well as the SCO’s Secretary General and director of the executive committee of the SCO Regional Antiterrorism Structure.

Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao welcomed the participants on behalf of the Chinese government. He advocated analyzing the results of the work that has been accomplished and planning to attain new heights.

Following the session the heads of state of SCO member countries held a joint press conference.
