Vladimir Putin is ready to consider amending the law on non-governmental organisations if the law will make it more difficult for NGOs to conduct their activities

July 4, 2006

The President of Russia made this statement at the international NGO forum in Moscow, Civil G8 2006.

The President emphasized that he has only one concern with respect to the activities of NGOs; the head of state is against foreign governments financing political activities within Russia.

The President does not exclude the fact that implementing the law may result in certain problems. However, he does not agree with the opinion that this law will result in it being harder for NGOs to operate in Russia. The law is designed to create order in this sphere rather than unnecessary difficulties, Vladimir Putin emphasized.

In the evening Vladimir Putin met with the leaders of the word's Largest non-governmental organisations. The discussion proceeded informally.
