President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

August 11, 2006

The conversation took place on Iran’s initiative.

Following on from their telephone conversation at the end of July, the two Presidents discussed the situation in the Middle East. Both sides noted that there has been an escalation in the situation in Lebanon and in the region in general.

At Mr Ahmadinejad’s request, Mr Putin detailed the diplomatic efforts Russia is making in order to bring an end to the bloodshed. This is, in particular, the objective pursued by the Russian draft resolution in the UN Security Council on a humanitarian ceasefire.
