Vladimir Putin has sent a greeting to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day

August 24, 2006

The address reads in part as follows:

”Our people have always been and remain the closest of neighbors, united by strong ties of friendship and trust. Today Russia and Ukraine have a good opportunity to expand bilateral and multilateral relations, especially through collaboration within the Commonwealth of Independent States. The most promising areas for such interaction include energy, industrial cooperation, transport, and incentives for mutual investment. Our humanitarian and cultural cooperation also has significant potential.

I am positive that mutual understanding and a willingness to compromise on unresolved issues will allow us to achieve a true strategic relationship, one of the fundamental principles of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership.“
