President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on combating economic crime. The meeting took place in Sochi and was attended by Prosecutor General Yury Chaika, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, Chairman of the Central Bank Sergei Ignatyev and Director of the Federal Security Service’s Economic Security Service Alexander Bortnikov. The meeting was called in response to the tragic murder of First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Andrei Kozlov.

In order for the banking supervision work, which Mr Kozlov oversaw, to not just continue but also become more effective, there is a need to clarify the legislation regarding banks’ work with clients who, according to a number of objective criteria, arouse suspicion as to their honesty, Mr Putin said.

The President also proposed moving as swiftly as possible to set up an inter-ministerial working group that would include representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Federal Taxation Service, the Federal Service for Fiscal Monitoring, the Federal Security Service and would also involve the Central Bank’s participation.

Earlier, at a meeting with Mr Ignatyev, Mr Putin asked the Central Bank chairman to pass on his most sincere condolences to the family of Mr Kozlov.
