Vladimir Putin sent a greeting to the participants and guests of the XIVth meeting of the heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement

September 15, 2006

The message reads, in particular:

“Today the world is faced with new threats such as terrorism, ethnic crises and conflicts, unequal economic development and environmental problems. And I believe that the most effective way to act against today’s threats is to search for collective solutions to them. And I am not only referring to nation states – we also need the most active participation possible by regional and international organisations in this process.

It is for this reason that the Non-Aligned Movement is in such demand today. It is made up of more than 100 states who are open to engaging in concrete discussion on the most important issues, ready to compromise, and good-spirited when working together to develop a unified position. I am convinced that these characteristics must constitute the basis of the system of international relations in the 21st century.

Russia is close to the Non-Aligned Movement because both understand that they have a general responsibility for the world’s destiny, they aspire to overcome confrontation in international relations, and they are in favour of a multilateral partnership.

Our relations have a long-standing and rich history. Mutual respect, a high degree of mutual understanding and a desire to cooperate are the principles at the basis of our relations. We work hand in hand within the United Nations, the most important global forum. Reforming this global organisation to make it more equitable and better correspond to today’s requirements is in our interests.

Let me emphasise that the Non-Aligned Movement is more than just a major partner for Russia. We consider your movement to be a key factor in today’s international system and expect that we will cooperate further for the benefit of our peoples and of all civilization”.
