The federal law ratifies the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism that the Russian Federation signed on 14 September 2005.
The Convention is being adopted following the Russian Federation’s initiative and is the first universal treaty designed to prevent acts of terrorism with weapons of mass destruction.
The Convention provides for a mechanism of cooperation between states to prevent acts of nuclear terrorism and also for exchanging information linked to uncovering, preventing and suppressing crimes stipulated in the Convention while ensuring that the confidentiality of such information can be protected.
The acceptance of the Convention establishes a basis for international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
The fundamental rights and freedoms of the person are subject to regulation by the Convention and its provisions touch upon ensuring international peace and security.
