President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations to President of the Republic of Angola Jose Eduardo Dos Santos

October 8, 2006

The President’s message of congratulations marks thirty years since Russia and Angola signed the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement.

The message reads in particular:

“Almost thirty years later, this document, which played an important part in establishing the multifaceted cooperation between Russia and Angola, remains relevant and forms the political foundation for Russian-Angolan relations.

These last decades have witnessed important historic events and fundamental changes in international life that have had an impact on both Russia and Angola. At the same time, our peoples’ shared desire to strengthen the friendly ties and mutually beneficial cooperation, the foundations of which were laid during the Angolan patriots’ selfless struggle for national liberation, remains unchanged.

The history of our bilateral relations contains many vivid pages and we value this shared heritage. Today, we cooperate in practically every area of intergovernmental relations. I am convinced that we have good opportunities today to take the relations between our two countries to a new level and I am sure that your upcoming visit to Russia will undoubtedly contribute to this.

We highly value Angola as a reliable partner on the international stage, with who we share a common approach to resolving the key challenges facing the world today. I am sure that our work together will help to establish a democratic and secure world order and to ensure sustainable development and progress”.
