Vladimir Putin sent a greeting to the participants and guests of the United European Legal Space and Constitutional Justice conference

October 26, 2006

The telegram reads, in particular:

“We consider the representative meeting that you are hosting in Moscow to be one of the most important events during the Russian presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The heads of judicial bodies and leading jurists will exchange their work experiences and discuss a whole range of important and topical issues. These issues include integrating the European constitutional space as well as protecting individuals from modern threats such as terrorism, organised crime, illegal drug trafficking and human trafficking.

Responsibly ensuring the rights and freedoms of the person directly depends on improving the practice of constitutional justice. In this respect, ensuring that all states strictly observe uniform legal standards in the field of human rights and that European countries fully implement the Council of Europe’s fundamental documents acts as a major reference point. First and foremost these fundamental documents include the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

I am confident that the ideas and proposals put forward during the conference will help further form a pan-European legal space and the development of constitutional justice.”
