President Vladimir Putin held talks with President of Vietnam Nguyen Minh Triet

November 20, 2006, Hanoi

Mr Putin began by saying that Russia and Vietnam are bound by ties of friendship and mutual support and gave his Vietnamese counterpart copies of documents on Ho Chi Minh’s time spent in the Soviet Union.

The talks then continued with the two countries’ delegations joining in and saw a detailed discussion of all areas of cooperation between Russia and Vietnam, especially economic cooperation.

The talks concluded with the signing of a joint Russian-Vietnamese statement and a joint declaration on continued cooperation in geological prospecting and oil and gas production. A number of bilateral agreements on cooperation in the energy, banking and tourism sectors were also signed during Mr Putin’s visit.

After the signature of the joint agreements, the two Presidents awarded Russian and Vietnamese state decorations to oil and gas sector workers from both countries.

The two leaders then made press statements and held a press conference.
