President holds Security Council session on socio-economic development of the Russian Far East

December 20, 2006, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin highlighted a major gap between the potential of the Far Eastern Federal District and its real economic performance and welfare. He called for a realistic and comprehensive regional development strategy.

The strategy will be in place only if there is close coordination between the federal, regional, and municipal government; if the roadblocks to the region’s infrastructure development are lifted, if there is outreach to private money in major projects, and if the economic playing field is kept level through favorable investment climate and government protection against corruption and organized crime, the president said.

Vladimir Putin urged the Russian Far East to become more closely involved in Asia-Pacific integration and develop international ties and cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries. He suggested that a special government commission be set up to oversee the socio-economic development of the federal district.

The session also involved Cabinet members, heads of security and law-enforcement agencies, Presidential executive office officials, presidential envoys to federal districts, and governors of the Far Eastern regions.
