The Russian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission is designed to act as an important instrument for strengthening Russian-Ukrainian cooperation

December 22, 2006

The first high-level session of the Russian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission took place in Kiev.

Participants in the session discussed topical issues relating to military and technological cooperation, trade and economic cooperation, including in the energy sector, the development of regional and cross-border ties, relations in the educational and cultural spheres, as well as issues linked to the Black Sea Fleet and the Azov-Kerch settlement.

Speaking at the session, Vladimir Putin pointed out that the rich potential of Russian-Ukrainian relations has not yet been fully exploited, especially in the trade and economic spheres. He expressed his hope that the activities of the Intergovernmental Commission will help the process of finding a constructive solution to all prospective problems and do so in the interests of the all-around development of Russian-Ukrainian relations.

Russian and Ukrainian presidents decided to create the Russian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission during Mr Putin’s previous visit to Kiev in March 2005.
