Developing civil society institutions remains among the government's priorities

January 11, 2007

The President discussed this issue at a meeting with members of the Council for Facilitating the Development of Civil Society Institutions and Human Rights that took place in the Kremlin. The law that was passed in December 2006 “On the Formation and Use of the Capital Stock of Non-Profit Organisations” lays out an efficient mechanism for allocating grants to nongovernmental organisations dealing with problems that affect today’s society.

The President noted that the state will continue to support the structures of civil society, including by implementing social control over the activities of law-enforcement agencies and penal structures, as well as in the fight against extremism, drugs, youth crime and child homelessness.

When speaking about the forthcoming elections in the State Duma and in regional legislative assemblies, Vladimir Putin noted how important it is that public organisations participate in the electoral process.
