In his letter, Mr Putin assessed the state of bilateral relations between Russia and Japan, noting that the two countries are working consistently on building the constructive partnership outlined in the Russo-Japanese Action Programme.

The President’s letter also reads:

“I think that we should concentrate particularly now on seriously developing our trade and economic cooperation and increasing investment, including in the Urals, Siberian and Far East regions. The objective necessary conditions are already in place for this work. The Russian and Japanese economies are in an upturn, our bilateral trade continues to grow, and our business communities are interested in profitable new projects.

Our business communities should play a key part in enriching and diversifying our economic relations and translating the plans we have drawn up into practical action. In this context, we place great importance on the major investment forum, which will take place during the Russian Prime Minister’s visit to Japan, and will involve the participation of leading entrepreneurs and financiers from both countries”.

The letter was passed on by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, currently visiting Tokyo.
