Acting President and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with Chairman of the Central Election Commission Alexander Veshnyakov

January 6, 2000, The Kremlin, Moscow

The discussion focused on preparations for the Russian presidential election, including issues related to organising the election process in the Chechen Republic.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Veshnyakov stressed that all the necessary conditions must be met in order to hold the election of the Russian president on March 26 in Chechnya simultaneously with the election of a State Duma deputy to represent the 31st single mandate district.

In the autumn of 1999, the Central Election Commission postponed the elections to the lower house of the Russian Parliament in Chechnya because the adverse situation there made the elections impossible.
