Acting President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema

During an in-depth and friendly conversation, Mr Putin and Mr D’Alema emphasized that relations between Russia and Italy had developed into a partnership and become an important factor in European policy. Both sides expressed interest in promoting political dialogues on key international issues in bilateral and multilateral format, including within the G8.

The two leaders spoke in favour of strengthening their trade and economic relations and developing cultural contacts.

At Mr D’Alema’s request, the acting president informed him about the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya, whose purpose was to restore law and order and allow the people of the republic to lead a normal life. Mr Putin confirmed Russia’s determination to find a political solution to the problem.

The two leaders agreed to maintain dialogue on all issues of mutual interest. Mr D’Alema invited Mr Putin to come to Italy on an official visit.
