Jose Maria Aznar congratulated Vladimir Putin on a convincing victory in the presidential election.
For his part, Mr Putin once again congratulated Mr Aznar on the victory of his Popular Party in Spain’s general elections.
During the conversation, the two leaders confirmed their commitment to developing bilateral cooperation and discussed some topical issues of Russian-Spanish relations.
Mr Aznar and Mr Putin also talked about an incident involving a recent charter flight. They agreed that this situation was not typical of the partnership between the two countries and should be tackled only in the spirit of compromise and without infringing on the rights of ordinary people.
Mr Aznar extended an invitation to Mr Putin to come to Spain on an official visit. The invitation was accepted.
