During the conversation, Jacques Chirac warmly congratulated Vladimir Putin on his victory in the presidential election and wished him success.
Both parties underlined the importance of further strengthening Russian-French cooperation and partnership based on common approaches to a number of international problems, on mutual confidence and respect. Mr Chirac emphasised that Russia is a priority partner for France. He reaffirmed his invitation to Mr Putin to visit France.
The two presidents continued the discussion on the situation in the North Caucasus, which was debated during Mr Putin’s talk yesterday with the European Union leaders.
The acting president spoke of Russia’s recent efforts to normalise the situation in Chechnya.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of understanding and supporting the enormous efforts Russia was making to combat international terrorism.
The conversation took place on France’s initiative.
