Acting President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

April 8, 2000

Vladimir Putin said he was pleased with the development of cooperation between Russia and the UN, the main aim of which was to guarantee security and stability in the world. Another important task is to strengthen the legal foundation of international relations by ensuring the inviolability of the key ideas and goals contained in the UN Charter, the acting president said.

Mr Putin and Mr Annan also discussed preparations for the Millennium Summit in September, the main UN event this year.

The two leaders also exchanged views on finding a solution to the Middle East conflict, including the situation in Lebanon.

During the discussion of the situation in the North Caucasus, Mr Annan reaffirmed his view of the role of the international community and the UN, including assistance to Russia in overcoming humanitarian problems and restoring peace in the region. The UN secretary general spoke critically of attempts to isolate Russia internationally.

Both parties expressed their commitment to continuing close cooperation. Mr Putin wished Mr Annan, who turned 62 today, a happy birthday.
