Acting President Vladimir Putin met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko

January 21, 2000, Kremlin, Moscow

They discussed topical aspects of Russian-Ukrainian trade and economic partnership, with an emphasis on energy.

As he was opening the meeting, Mr Putin said he was sure all bilateral economic problems would be solved in the near future.

The negotiators stressed the necessity of an all-round approach to the problem of Ukrainian back payments for Russian fuel and energy. The parties agreed on a united Russian-Ukrainian energy balance to be urgently drawn so as to calculate either country’s energy demand and coordinate resource output.
