Acting President Vladimir Putin met President of Azerbaijan Heidar Aliyev

January 24, 2000, The Kremlin, Moscow

Mr Putin welcomed the continuation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani dialogue and said he hoped that the meeting between Mr Aliyev and Robert Kocharian had provided a fresh impetus to resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

Mr Putin and Mr Aliyev also discussed cooperation between law-enforcement bodies in the fight against international terrorism and collaboration between the two countries' border services. Mr Aliyev spoke of the efforts the Azerbaijani authorities had taken to keep militants and terrorists out of the country.

He emphasised that Azerbaijan was interested in the stability of the Caucasus as much as Russia.

The Russian side, in turn, praised Azerbaijan's efforts to protect its borders and fight international terrorism.
