Acting President and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the Volgograd military garrison hospital

February 22, 2000, Volgograd

The hospital treats officers and soldiers injured during the North Caucasian counter-terrorist operation.

The acting president presented Certificates of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, commending officers and soldiers for exceptional valour and bravery, and also presented them with memorable gifts.

Top hospital officials addressed Mr Putin with a request to allocate additional 10 million roubles to buy medical equipment for the hospital. Mr Putin then asked Rosvooruzheniye arms exporting state company representatives whether this was feasible and, upon receiving an affirmative answer, instructed them to fulfil the hospital’s request. Mr Putin also presented the hospital with a reanimobile.

The military garrison hospital, which was opened in 1943 during the battle of Stalingrad, now has 24 wards and 387 medical workers, including 81 doctors. The 520-bed hospital cured over 3,000 officers and soldiers during the first Chechen campaign.
