Acting President and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a resolution of the Cabinet approving the intergovernmental Russian-Italian draft agreement on Italy's assistance in the destruction of Russia's chemical weapons stockpiles

The agreement stipulates that Italy will provide Russia with financial assistance to build infrastructure, as well as with goods and services within the framework of projects aimed at the realisation of the presidential federal target programme ”Destruction of Chemical Weapons Stockpile in the Russian Federation“. In particular, Italy will grant a financial assistance for the construction of a plant for the destruction of chemical weapons in Kizner, the Udmurt Republic, or in another region stipulated in the agreement. The funding will be used for the development and construction of the infrastructure for gas, water, energy and sanitary equipment supplies and environmental monitoring. Italian representatives will be able to visit the sites with Russia’s consent.

The draft agreement includes a provision under which Italy will grant financial assistance of 15 billion Italian lire, to be paid in sums of 5 billion lire annually in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

The resolution the Russian government instructs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign this agreement on its behalf.
