A parade devoted to the 55th anniversary of the USSR's victory in the Great Patriotic War was held on Red Square

May 9, 2000, Moscow

Addressing the parade’s participants, President Vladimir Putin said the USSR’s victory in the Great Patriotic War had seriously tested the state, the spirit of the people, their cohesion and military camaraderie.

Mr Putin greeted the veterans from fraternal CIS states and stressed that the peoples of the USSR had defended peace and their motherland together, prevented history from being rewritten and made a decisive contribution to the victory over Nazism.

The parade involved 5,000 war veterans and over 5,000 servicemen.
