After a private meeting between the Russian and Uzbek presidents, they continued their talks in the presence of their delegations.

At a news conference later on, Mr Putin said that the two parties had either similar or identical views on all the subjects they had discussed. He added that Uzbekistan and Russia had a high level of trust in each other, which was first achieved during his visit to Tashkent in December 1999 as prime minister.

Speaking about guaranteeing security in the region and the fight against terrorism and extremism, Mr Putin said that Uzbekistan could rely on Russia’s understanding and assistance.

Mr Karimov, in his turn, noted that the two countries had common positions on regional security and efforts to counter international terrorism.

The Russian President described the talks as credible and constructive. He said that the two countries would continue building their relations with respect for each other’s interests and without interfering in each other’s domestic affairs.

Mr Putin also visited the Islamic University in the Uzbek capital.
