President Vladimir Putin attended a meeting of the Collective Security Council

May 24, 2000, Minsk

During the meeting, members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) expressed their unanimous view that security relations between the member countries should have a higher priority than their security relations with other countries.

After the meeting, Mr Putin said that the member countries had worked out a mechanism which would make the Collective Security Treaty an instrument that could promptly react to a fast changing world. He stressed that all states that shared the same approach could enter the CSTO.

Mr Putin emphasised the importance of a joint statement on prioritising the treaty over all other security measures used by the member countries.
