President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with President Askar Akayev of Kyrgyzstan

May 26, 2000

During the conversation, Mr Putin stressed that Russia welcomed the enactment by the Kyrgyz Parliament of a law giving Russian the status of an official language along with the Kyrgyz language.

From now on, Russian will receive state protection as an official language in Kyrgyzstan, and the country will take the necessary measures to promote its use and development.

Passing the law giving Russian the status of an official language is a good example of bilateral cooperation, a result of joint work to guarantee the rights of compatriots living in another country.

Mr Putin pointed out that the position of the Kyrgyz leaders left no doubt that the new law would be successfully implemented.
