President Vladimir Putin met with members of the National Public Human Rights Commission in the North Caucasus

May 27, 2000, The Kremlin, Moscow

The head of state stressed that human rights must never be violated in Chechnya. He said that no matter how difficult it might be, it was necessary to strictly obey the law in the republic, including the Criminal Procedure Code.

Mr Putin said that members of the commission had already visited Chechnya and had started their work. The President said he supported the commission because the country’s leadership was more interested in its effectiveness than in its mere presence or the positive response it had met with in the republic and abroad.
