Mr Putin and Mr Rau discussed a broad range of issues. The Russian President informed his counterpart about the situation in the North Caucasus at the German leader’s request.

Mr Putin and Mr Rau also examined issues related to strategic stability in the context of anti-ballistic missile defence.

The two leaders focussed on Russian-German cultural cooperation and emphasised the importance of studying German in Russia and Russian in Germany.

Both Presidents also discussed a number of international issues, including the situation in the Balkans and Kosovo.
