Mr Putin and Mr Kohl agreed on the need to strengthen Russian-German ties in every area.
They discussed important international issues, including the situation in the Balkans, Iraq and European countries’ views on the Russian proposal to establish a joint missile defence system.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Yevgeny Primakov, leader of the Fatherland-All Russia parliamentary party, also took part in the talks.
