Mr Putin informed Mr Jiang about his recent talks with US President Bill Clinton.

The Russian President said that relations between Moscow and Beijing were very important and stressed that Russia intended to develop a strategic partnership with China.

Russia, according to the President, is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China on issues related to international strategic stability and security. He added that he was looking forward to meeting with Mr Jiang in Dushanbe during the summit of the Shanghai Five, and later in mid-July of 2000 in Beijing.
