The talks begun at the Russian President’s countryside residence and continued in the Kremlin, where delegation members joined the meeting.

The meeting discussed current issues of political cooperation, trade and economic relations, near-border interaction, use of the Baikonur Space Centre, issues related to the fuel and energy complex, rail transportation rates and the Caspian Sea’s international status.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev suggested also establishing the CIS Russian Language Defence Foundation. Mr Putin supported the proposal.

During the talks, the parties signed several joint agreements. Russian and Kazakh Prime Ministers, Mikhail Kasyanov and Kasymzhomart Tokayev, signed an agreement on cooperation in IT and communications spheres. Mr Putin and Mr Nazarbayev signed a joint statement and a memorandum on cooperation in the effective use of the Baikonur Space Centre.

At a news conference following the talks, Mr Putin said, “Baikonur is being used jointly. By this memorandum we documented that the use will be continued on a long-term basis.” He noted that the Kazakh side would increase its participation in the scientific work, staff training and security of the space centre.

The Presidents praised the results of the talks and the level of the Russian-Kazakh cooperation.
