Acting President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski

March 6, 2000

Mr Kwasniewski conveyed his personal gratitude and, as he emphasised, the gratitude of the entire Polish nation, for the rescue of two Polish women who had been kidnapped by militants.

Mr Putin expressed the hope that this example would serve to increase the awareness among Polish politicians and the public of the true nature of events taking place in the North Caucasus and to prevent any kind of support of Chechen militants at a time when Russia had taken on a burden of a bloody war.

The telephone conversation was initiated by the Polish President.
