Acting President Vladimir Putin instructed the Government to draw up proposals on enhancing cooperation between the Shanghai Five countries in different fields

March 2, 2000

The instructions followed a report prepared by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the course of the preparations for a regular meeting of Shanghai Five heads of state (Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) scheduled for May 2000 in Dushanbe.

Mr Putin also sent response messages to the presidents of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in which he expressed his opinion on organising a Shanghai Five summit.
