President Vladimir Putin sent a message to delegates of the 50th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs

August 3, 2000

The message said:

“In the past 50 years, world-famous scientists, members of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, have made a great contribution to promoting peace in the interest of happiness and prosperity the world over.

“We appreciate the fact that the Pugwash movement had promoted the conclusion of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which are the pillar of global security and have tremendous importance today.

“Russian leaders have consistently advocated efforts to strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime and have promoted subsequent nuclear disarmament. Russia has ratified the START-II Treaty, and plans to enact it in the near future and to ensure its fulfilment. Moreover, Russia intends to sign the START-III Treaty as soon as possible.

“We are convinced that the noble initiatives of the Pugwash movement will continue to strengthen global peace and accord, and will promote rapprochement between countries and peoples around the world.”
