The involved conversation was the two leaders’ first direct contact. They discussed current issues of friendly Russian-Egyptian relations. Vladimir Putin confirmed his intention to visit Egypt on invitation within terms acceptable to either party.

The Russian and Egyptian Presidents had a detailed discussion of Middle Eastern settlement and its prospects. Mr Putin informed the Egyptian President about his recent negotiations with Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat. The Presidents discussed practical aspects of the peace process and agreed to stay in contact.
