August 10, 2000

The Israeli leader expressed his most sincere condolences over the terrorist act in Moscow, and both parties affirmed their commitment to further bilateral cooperation and participation in international efforts to fight extremism, aggressive separatism and other forms of terrorism.

Mr Putin and Mr Barak further discussed the efforts to settle the Middle East situation, which developed after Israeli-Palestinian talks at Camp David.

Mr Putin stressed that as a co-sponsor of the peace process, Russia would continue to do its utmost to reach a compromise between the parties on settlement issues in order to promote stable and lasting peace in the region.

The two leaders underlined that it was important for the Russian and Israeli governments to exchange opinions openly, and discussed the schedule for future contacts.
