Mr Putin thanked Mr Jiang for the warm congratulations on winning the presidential election, and pointed out that Jiang Zemin was the first foreign leader who rang him up right after the elections.
During the talk the two leaders confirmed their commitment to further promoting the friendship and strategic partnership between Russia and China in all areas.
They discussed plans for further top-level contacts in 2000.
