They discussed the situation in Chechnya as well as ensuring security for the ICRC personnel fulfilling a humanitarian mission in the republic. The Committee declared its intention to expand aid to Chechen citizens.
During the meeting, the Russian side expressed readiness to provide ICRC officials with permits to visit all temporary detention facilities should they need to do so.
Vladimir Putin and Jacob Kellenberger praised the level of interaction and cooperation between Russia and ICRC, the oldest international humanitarian organization.
The meeting was also attended by Russia’s Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, the president’s aide Sergei Yastrzhembsky, and deputy chief of staff of the presidential executive office Sergei Prikhodko.
