Acting President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi

The Japanese Prime Minister warmly congratulated Vladimir Putin on his spectacular victory in the presidential election, noting that the event had a positive significance not only for the Russian people, but also for other countries which want to see a prosperous and stable Russia.

Mr Putin thanked Mr Obuchi for the congratulations and words of support, and expressed confidence that progressive development of partnership between Russia and Japan would be ensured through joint efforts.

During their talk Mr Putin and Mr Obuchi discussed the schedule of future bilateral contacts and agreed to cooperate closely in the preparation of the Okinawa G8 summit in July 2000.
