Jean Chretien congratulated Vladimir Putin on his convincing victory in the presidential election and wished him every success as a leader who has the confidence of the Russian people. Mr Chretien stressed that Canada was open to all-round development of friendly relations with Russia.

Thanking him for the congratulations, Mr Putin expressed his confidence that cooperation between Russia and Canada in various spheres would reveal the huge potential of bilateral relations.
