Vladimir Putin sent a message to Syrian President Bashar Assad

September 18, 2000

The message reads, in part:

“Russia has always sympathised with friendly Syria and valued cooperation with your country in various areas. I am sure that the potential of the Russian-Syrian relations might and should be effectively used in our mutual interests. This will undoubtedly have a positive effect on both the situation in the Middle East and other global processes where we share a common viewpoint advocating a multi-polar system of international relations and oppose dictatorship in settling global crises.”

The message further said: “Today’s situation favours broadening of mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries. For that we have the necessary mutual political will, legal basis and economic capabilities represented by numerous facilities built in Syria with Russia’s assistance, which have already proved their cost efficiency and reliability.”
