September 8, 2000, New York

In his address to the meeting of the UN Security Council, the Russian President stressed the United Nation’s key role in settling acute political and armed conflicts in the world. The international organisation should focus on developing its anti-crisis potential and ability to prevent crisis situations, he said.

Later, the five permanent members of the Security Council met at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Following the meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Jiang Zemen, US President Bill Clinton, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac adopted a joint statement.

Before leaving the Millennium Summit, the Russian President gave a news conference at the United Nations headquarters.
