Vladimir Putin chaired a Security Council meeting on ways to improve the state military development policy

September 27, 2000, The Kremlin, Moscow

When opening the meeting, the President stressed that all reforms should be aimed at resolving the current problems of the Armed Forces, primarily social ones.

Mr Putin also said it was essential to make the Russian Army flexible, mobile and fit for combat. Russia cannot afford to maintain an army which is not provided with the latest technical equipment and modern hardware.

The President instructed the agencies concerned to calculate economic parameters of the future military reform.
