Russia and Kazakhstan, important players in the world energy market, have increased their cooperation in the energy sector

May 10, 2007

Key themes of the talks that were held in Astana between the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, included the development of economic relations, space exploration, and new forms of military and technical cooperation.

Participants in the talks paid particular attention to issues relating to the fuel and energy sector as well as nuclear energy. Intergovernmental agreements on establishing an International Uranium Enrichment Centre and opening trade missions were signed during the President’s official visit to Kazakhstan. A 2007–2008 joint action plan for Russia and Kazakhstan was adopted. It includes a series of priority events involving cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan and acts as a good basis for ensuring the integrated development of integration processes.

At the final press conference Vladimir Putin noted that documents relating to the joint use of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, improving transport and energy infrastructure, facilitating access across the Russia-Kazakhstan border, are almost ready.
