President Vladimir Putin and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov took part in a ceremony to mark the start of construction of the Alexander Pushkin Russian-Turkmen School

May 11, 2007, Ashgabat

At the ceremony, Mr Putin spoke in support of promoting study of the Russian language in Turkmenistan, saying that knowledge of Russian would open up new opportunities for young people in the country and help them to get to know modern Russia better. The President said that this would be a positive force for cementing the relations between the two countries.

The two Presidents laid a commemorative capsule in the building’s foundation bearing the words in Russian and Turkmen: “President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov have laid this capsule as a mark of their desire to support and develop close and friendly relations between Russia and Turkmenistan for the good of future generations in both countries and as a gesture of goodwill to commemorate this event”.

The new school will be located on Saparmurat Turkmenbashi Prospekt, one of the main streets in the administrative and cultural centre of Ashgabat.
