President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations to President of Cyprus Glafkos Klirides on the occasion of the Republic of Cyprus' 40th-anniversary celebrations

October 1, 2000

The President’s message reads, in particular:

“I am sure that the good traditions and potential for cooperation we have built up will enable us to look to the future with confidence and to maintain and develop the positive growth that characterises Russian-Cypriot relations in the twenty-first century.

I would like to note in this respect that Russia’s diplomatic efforts focus constantly on achieving a fair and comprehensive settlement in Cyprus based on the UN Charter, the UN Resolution on Cyprus and the principles of international law. Through its work in the UN Security Council and other influential international forums, Russia will continue to consistently uphold the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and its people’s natural and legitimate desire to live in peace and harmony. A settlement that takes into account the interests of all Cypriots would unquestionably help to strengthen security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and surrounding regions”.
